Dear Josh,

Any advice for someone just starting a career as a copywriter.  I am enrolled in a class at the School of Visual Arts to find out if I like racking my brain in this manner to make it my career.

Been an actor for the past nine years, but have always loved to write.  Anything.  Plays, songs, cards, letters, notes, credit card applications...you name it.  Really think I have some talent and would enjoy this career.

What computer programs/applications are essential to know as a copywriter?

Is it better to start out at one of the larger NY agencies or a smaller one?

Can someone with no expierence expect to be even granted an interview at an agency?

What do you look for in someone just starting out that you may be interviewing?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.  I have a lot of desire to succeed in this field, I just want a chance to prove it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of advertising.

As far as programs go, there are many. If you can deal with any of the typical word processing programs you should be fine. Many people use Microsoft Word, but I prefer Apple Works. It's just easier to use and send around in a field that is mostly Apple based.

I think that if there is an agency that you want to work for - big or small- you should go for it. Most agencies will give any one a shot based on ability, not on experience. I personally don't care how long someone has been doing something. I care how well they do it.

Be persistent when trying to get in somewhere. Send your resume. Send samples of your work. Send follow up letters. Send faxes. Call weekly. Sometimes people may even give you an interview just so that you'll stop bugging them. But a foot in the door is good no matter how you got it there.

When you do get into an agency for an interview, relax. Be yourself. They are looking for someone who is creative and original. Don't show up in a three-piece suit with a stuffy briefcase, perfect posture and sweaty hands. Advertising is a creative environment and people want to see that you will not only be able to perform, but that you'll fit in as well.

Now I'm not saying that you should add a green mohawk to your look the day before an interview. Just be yourself. And if you already have a green mohawk, then more power to you.

I hope that this is helpful. Talk to your instructors. I'm sure that they not only have the knowledge to help you, but that they have contacts in the field as well. They may have former students and alumni that they have stayed in touch with. You'd be surprised how many people get hired because they no someone.

When you meet someone in the field, stay in contact with them. You never know when they may be able to help you, or you can help them.
