Question
Hi was wondering if you can help answer a cardio workout question for me. I started to do cardio workout in mid december due to the fact i had a higher than usual resting hear rate, about 115 to be exact I also quit smoking, I do cardio 30 mins a day for 4-6 days a week, I did have a complete cardo workup at the cardiologist, everything normal, he actually suggested I work out and calm down , he attributes this high heart rate to smoking, anxiety, and being unfit. I have noticed the rate drop into the low 90's to high 80's My question is how long will it take doing cardio to lower my rate into the mid to low 70's like it idealy should be? Any help would be great? Thanks so much in advance

Answer
Hello-
In order to change your resting heart rate, you will need to continue to do cardio and also challenge your cardiovascular system.  Perhaps the type of cardio or the intensity is too easy for you now.  You didn't mention exactly what you have been doing, but you should either increase the time or the intensity of your workouts.  You should see a gradual change after about 6-8 weeks of continually challenging yourself.

Hope this helps,
Kim
