Aerobics/High Max heart rate

Question
I am 47 years old, have been working out for about 8 months.  Whenever I am doing cardio my heart rate will go up to 164. (usually will get this high in a spinning class or jogging) I have been wearing a heart rate monitor, so whenever it gets that high I will lower the intensity so I'm at 155.  Is it dangerous to be at 164?  How do I condition my heart so that it doesn't get that high?

Answer
Hi Cathy-
I'm glad to hear that you have been working out so consistently!  Keep it up.  As for your heart rate, it is almost impossible for me to answer this question without doing some testing on you.  Based on my experience with people your age, it does seem high.  For most people in your age group, a heart rate between 130-140 seems more likely.  The most important thing is how you feel when your heart rate gets that high....do you feel lightheaded or dizzy?  You should be able to hold a conversation while you are exercising (assuming you aren't doing anything at too high of an intensity).  I'm not sure where you live, but perhaps you could visit your local gym and ask for an assessment from a trainer.  If you live anywhere in the Denver metro area, I would be glad to do it for you.

I hope that helps a little, thanks for the question.
