Aerobics - Extra Tummy Question

Expert: Daphne E Brown MS CPRP - 6/1/2009

Question
Hello,

I'm a fit, 36-yr-old female, 5'9, 135 pounds.  I perform intensive exercise 5x/week (pwr set weight training 2x, interval cardio 3x for 1+ hr each).  I eat healthy and, according to my body fat percentage, I'm borderline "professional athlete" category.  I do upper/lower/obligue abs workout on my weight lifting days, and I change up my exercising routines regularly.   Why can't I get rid of the flab on my tummy?  Is it b/c I had a c-section 2 yrs ago?  Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Annabel

PS - Daphne responded, but there was no answer my question.

Answer
Hi Annabel. I apologize you did not get my answer. Here is an article that very closely reflects what I have found in my years of experience as an exercise professional.

In my years of training, research and working with hundreds of women, I have found that the "pouch" of fat fit women so often complain about, especially who have had abdominal surgery involving cutting the muscles in that area, is probably due to scar tissue or the way the cut muscles have healed (you must verify this with your physician).

If you are worried about the aesthetics of your "flab on my tummy", liposuction or cosmetic surgery of the area may be a viable option for you to consider, especially if you continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I always say that healthy positive self awareness is a great place to start when you are considering surgical body enhancements when you have run out of reasonable exercise/healthy nutritional intake (the way your eat) options. Of course always consult with a board certified plastic or cosmetic surgeon when considering this matter.

Hope this helps you a little bit at least.  Take care and congratulations on maintaining a healthy lifestyle!!!  Daphne
