Aerobics/Losing weight through swimming

Question
Hi,

I'm 21, 5ft 6" and currently weigh about 12 stone. I am aiming to lose about 1st / 1.5st and to generally tone up.

I used to really enjoy swimming when i was younger and wonder whether this might be a good way to lose weight? I have done some research on the internet and there are many conflicting theories as to whether swimming is a good way to lose weight. On the one hand i understand swimming uses a lot of muscles in the body and therefore would think it'd be good for losing weight and toning up. On the other hand i have read that it might lead to putting on weight through muscle bulk instead.

I wonder if you could steer me in the right direction and, if it turns out swimming would be a good way to lose weight, what strokes would be effective.

Many thanks in advance

Jo

Answer
Hello, swimming is an excellent cardiovascular exercise as long as it is at an intensity that is challenging your heart and muscles.  It is good for both toning and weight loss, similar to running, biking, jumproping, etc.  It will not make you bulk up since you aren't actually lifting any weight.  If done often enough and at a challenging pace, it is a great weight loss option for exercise.

As for the best strokes, I don't know that one stroke is better than another as long as you are in constant motion for a specific amount of time (try 30 minutes or so).  Combined with good nutrition and other exercise modalities, you should see results of 1-2 lbs of weight loss per week.

I hope this helps, thanks for the question.
