Aerobics/Jumping rope- calf v.s. shin muscles

Question
I am looking for an effective cardio routine I can do at home. I have heard jumping rope is a great choice. I would like to do that daily, but I have heard that too much jumping rope can over develop calf muscles, not work shin muscles, and result in an increased chance of getting shin splints.

Is this true? Is so, what can I so to strengthen my shin muscles to keep up with the calf muscles?

I hate running and am not suggesting that for a reason, I would much rather prefer to find a cardio activity I like.

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Answer
Kristin,

Overdeveloped calf muscles can lead to shin splints, so you are correct. To avoid those you will also want to do exercises to build your tibialis muscles. You can do a few different exercises like walking on your heels. You can usually find numerous exercises on the Internet and I encourage you to do so. You will also want to stretch your legs daily to be sure that you do not develop any over active muscles.  Hope this info helps.
