Question
Hi Ken-

I hope you can help.  I'm in good physical shape and exchanged my aerobics routine (1 hour 3-4 x a wk.), to dancing (to top VH1 dance music-like Gaga).  I usually dance a good 30-40 min. total). I've been doing this about 4 months. I also started a new job 2 months ago which is active. On my feet 9 hours, 6 days and it can get pretty active).  I'm always in sneakers except for dancing.  Since I have carpeting, I've been using "Isotoner" slippers.  They're nice and smooth on the bottom (for turns, etc.), and a bit similar to ballet slippers.

My legs are contantly achy (but I LOVE to dance instead of exercise).  I'm also worried about my knees, I don't want to damage anything.  Also- I just turned 50.  PLEASE- what could you suggest I wear for my feet? The other question- is there anything at the local health store, that might help?  Maybe my leg muscles are having a tough time adjusting to the major increase in activity.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much for your time and kind help.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Respectfully,
Susie

Answer
Did the aching start when dancing replaced your other exercise, or did the aching start when you began the new job?  It sounds like the legs need some rest, particularly since the new job began.  Not to discourage you from dancing, but do some strength training for your legs.  The stronger your legs are, the easier it will be to be active 9 hours a day.  Dancing will be easier on the legs as well when they get stronger.  If your carpeting is on top of concrete or some other non-giving surface, it's a very jarring surface to dance on. Well- cushioned and supportive shoes should be tried.  It should make the dancing feel better on the legs because it good shoes absorb some of the stresses on the legs.  You have to go to a shoe store and try on different "cross-trainers / fitness / studio" shoes to see which ones feel good to you and that you can dance in.

I'd suggest to drop the dance altogether temporarily and replace it with strength training.  Once your legs get stronger in a few months, you can go back to dance.  I know, when you love something you don't want to stop doing it.  But you'll have the rest of your life to do it.  Get stronger first so you can enjoy it.  It's not as enjoyable as it could be when you're achy all the time.

Hope this helps.
