Aerobics/Effectiveness of Exercise Videos

Question
Hello Ms. Erwin,

I'm a student at the University of Florida and am working on an article for my journalism class concerning in-home exercise videos.

I wanted to ask your expert opinion: Can videos provide the same benefits as other forms of exercise?

What are some things beginners should keep in mind when starting an exercise routine?

What are the benefits and drawbacks of in-home exercise?

Please feel free to add any other information you feel would be helpful.

Thank you so much in advance for you help!

Sincerely,
Andra Parrish

Answer
Hi Andra,
I believe that any exercise whether it's from a video, gym, being outside, or organized sports is beneficial.  The problem is getting people to actually do it.

Beginners usually don't have a clue about posture, body alignment, etc.  They are usually the ones that get hurt because they do too much too soon, or do it incorrectly.  It's helpful for them to get a personal trainer for at least 3-5 sessions to get them started on the right plan.  Once they "get it", they can proceed on their own.

People I know who do video exercise tapes, usually do the same one over and over.  They do not benefit you after a while as your body gets used to it.  The great benefit comes from cross training.  The other impt. piece is that people need to exercise at least 3-5 times per week to see improvements.

Good luck on your paper,
Linda
