Question
I am looking into buying either an upright or recumbent exercise bike, and wanted to know your opinion on something.  I know there are pros and cons to each, but what about in terms of durability and reliability.  Which is better in that respect, and which is less likely to break down and stand up over time?  Is one more prone to needing repairs?  Also, I heard from somebody that the upright bikes work quadriceps better, while recumbents work hamstrings and buttocks more.  I thought both kinds work all parts of the legs.  Which one will you get a better aerobic workout from?  I want to make sure I'm really huffing and puffing.  Thanks very much for your help.

Answer
I'm not that savy re: exercise equipment but I do know that recumbent bikes are better support for your back.  They both work your quads and hamstrings and if you want to huff and puff you are going to have to add resistance and cadence (speed).  You can do that on any piece of equipment.  Add length of time to that and you have a great workout.
Good luck!
