Aerobics/Muscle Weight?

Question
Hi:

I'm a little distraught.  Two months ago, I began an exercise/aerobic regime at Curves.  I go on average about 3 times a week.  My problem is that I was about 135 lbs when I joined.    Since my second measurement in July, I gained one pound.  However, my body fat went down 0.9%.  Ok.  I'm due for my third measurement any day now, but I'm incredibly upset, because on my scale at home I was 138!  I know the increment is small, but I'm furious.  I've been eating the same foods, the same amount for as long as I can remember, and I have never gained so much weight rapidly.  I'm 5'6, 17 years old, and I feel that 138 is waaaaayyy tooo much.  I've been told that I shouldn't necessarily worry too much about it, but I leave for the Army in ten months and I need to be in shape.  I'd feel horrible and embaressed if I weighed too much where they'd have to tape me.  Could I have actually gained muscle weight, or is it water weight?  Any suggestions on how I could lose it?  Thank you so much for you're time.  It's truly appreciated!

Answer
Hi Emily,
First of all, losing body fat and gaining muscle is great news.  You will burn more calories at rest as you gain muscle.  Remember, muscle weighs more than fat so that is why you might be up a few lbs.  Also you could have water weight....that changes daily.  If you want to lose weight then you will have to eat a little less or change the foods you eat.  Eliminate high fat, sugary and starchy foods.  Eat more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, as well as whole grains.  Drink at least 5-8 glasses of water per day and you will feel great after a few  weeks.  You will also lean down.  In terms of going to the Army, they will hopefully measure your body fat not your weight in lbs.  There's a difference of being overweight and overfat.  Don't stop working out because you will need to have strength when you are in the Army and they will work you hard in boot camp.  Get ahead of the game and increase your strength and endurance.  Good luck!
