Aerobics/Straining

QuestionHi Linda,
I was hoping that you could help me with this following little problem that I have.
I've been doing aerobics for awhile, and am in pretty good shape. It's gotten to the point where I master one routine and technique very quickly and need a much more thorough one to even break a sweat. There are two things that concern me, though:
1. My arms tire very quickly, while my lower body is extremely strong and fit. Whenever the routine calls for lfiting your arms, I can never do it as much as the instructor. It's very embarassing to have to stop for two sets and then begin again.
2. Whenever the routine calls for you to kick or punch, I seem to do it so hard (or so wrong) that my joints (elbows and knees) are jerked. I know that I will probably get problems from this later on.
What can I do to make my exercise better?
Thanks in advance,
Michelle
AnswerHi Michelle,
It sounds like you just need to concentrate on your upper body strength. Do you ever work out with weights? I would recommend that you do some weight training working on your biceps/triceps; deltoids (shoulders); and latissimus dorsi (back). You would only have to work them 2-3 times per week and in a short time you would see definition and strength.
As far as proper form so you don't hurt yourself...go up to the instructor before or after class and ask he/she to show you how to execute the moves correctly. You never want to use jerky, hard movements. All those punches need to be fluid. The instructor's job is to make sure that people do the movements correctly and to minimize injuries. You were right when you said that it will catch up to you if you don't learn how to do it correctly.
Stay safe and keep working out!
