Aerobics/How to buy best shoes for step aerobics

Question
I've been doing step aerobics (The Firm) for a couple of months now.  I've always had a problems with one knee, it starts hurting after about one mile of walking.  So any bending will aggrivate it.

I've also have problems with the ball of my right foot (from dancing in 3 1/2" heels many years ago). I try to land gently as possible when stepping off the box but I want to take as much precautions as I can.

Do you have any recommendations on how I can find the best exercise shoes for my situation?  I don't want to just depend on some sales person since they are not always knowledgeable.  Any websites that maybe have Q & A to assist in finding something I can at least try?
