Subject: marathon recovery

Question
On Sunday, September 26th I completed my first full marathon in 4:39 which I'm quite happy with. (for now). I've had a bit of muscle soreness but it's mostly recovered. Previously I had done two half marathons and two runs of at least 22 miles. After the race I ate a bagel, some fruit and some Gatorade.
The problem occured after the race. I drove myself home, had a shower which I turned into a bath. Immediately I felt dizzy and nauseus. I had several very loose bowel movements and vomited several times quickly. Then I fainted for between 15 to 30 seconds.
My wife called EMS and they responded. My BP was 83/50 and pulse was 91. I came around slowly and was transferred to a hospital. As my veins had collapsed they could not start an IV in the ambulance and I sat in the ER at the hospital for several hours without seeing a Dr. Finally I felt well enough to drink a bottle of water and eat a muffin. I spoke to the triage nurse and told her that I was wasting their time waiting. Before I left my BP was 110/80.
I also followed up with my family Dr. on Monday who had no issues.
Sunday was warm, between 70-75 degrees and I thought that I had hydrated well. I urinated 15 minutes before the race and twice in the first half as well as drinking both water and Gatorade at all 2nd half aid stations. I don't deny that I was dehyrated, but it was not enough to make me collapse.
After all of this I want to do another 1/2 marathon on Oct 18th. Is it too early, is it OK, or should I just listen to my body?

Thanks

***Suggestions offered here may or may not help you in your particular situation.  Please consult with a physician when adding or changing an exercise/nutrition routine***

Rob,
I'm so sorry you when through that ordeal after your maration.  Sounds like a combination of poor nutrition preparation and dehydration and/or heat exhaustion/stroke (especially if you did not properly hydrate throughout the week before).  However YOU NEED TO CONSULT WITH A PHYSICIAN if you haven'e already.

AS WITH ANY MEDICAL OR POSSIBLE MEDICAL PROBLEM, IF YOU ARE NOT SATISFIED WITH THE MEDICAL ADVICE YOU ARE GIVEN BY A LICENSED PHYSISCIAN OR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONAL, YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO GET A SECOND OPINION.  I am glad that you live a healthy lifestyle, but you MUST take care of youself the best you can.  GOOD LUCK, and sorry I couldn't help you more.
