Question
Is it true that standard sit ups (laying down, knees folded up in the air, hands behind your head) are the best way to lose a gut? I hear different reactions, that this is the best way to achieve a flat stomach, or that it's bad for your back and if your hands are behind your head it's not working because you're essentially pulling yourself up.

Hello-
The best way to lose fat from any area of your body (including the abdominal area) is through cardiovascular exercise.  Sit ups do nothing except tone and strengthen the muscle under the layer of fatty tissue.  As for the type of sit up that you should do, it is whatever is most comfortable for you.  There are different variations of course and the one you mention is perfectly ok.  The purpose of the hands behind the head is strictly to support the neck.  Ensure that the abdominal muscles are doing the work by contracting them during the up and down phase of the movement.
