Question
Can you tell me the differences between aviation engineering and aeronautical engineering? I want to be a pilot but I am also interested in taking engineering as well. Could you please tell me which engineering is related to a pilot's career? I would also want to know which university is offering such courses. If possible I want something which twins with pilot studies. Thank you very much.

Answer
I am not familiar with aviation engineering, but I have seen a description of a program called Aeronautical Science which provides, I assume, courses on all things related to aircraft and flying.  Aeronautical Engineering is a more general, theoretical study of flight including fluid mechanics, propulsion, aerodynamics, gas dynamics, etc.  It is difficult for me to advise which is better for a pilot career because I studied Aeronautical Engineering and like the in-depth study of basic physics such as aerodynamics and stability/control.  I believe that could be very beneficial to a pilot.  Others may feel that Aeronautical Science gives a more hands-on approach which might be better for a pilot.  If you want to position yourself for multiple career possibilities, engineering is hard to beat.  But if you are sure to become a pilot the Aeronautical Science program may be best.  Check the course descriptions at the Embry Riddle website.

Thanks.
