Question
Dear Mark

Can there be more than one pair of rotor blades in a Helicopter ?.

If yes, what are the advantages or disadvantages?.

Thanks
Prashant

Answer
Certainly there can be more than one set of rotor blades ...  coaxial counterrotating blades are designed to eliminate the residual swirl that any single rotor imparts to the flow (an inefficiency)..  also there are dual rotor helicopters (noncoaxial) in operation today... and then many small drones are quad rotor copters...  the advantage to having more than one rotor is higher lifting capability and/or each rotor can be smaller...  disadvantages typically involve the complicated control and drive train in order to fly with such a mechanism...

Thanx,
mj
