Aeronautical Engineering/Gas Turbine transmissions.

I'll try to be brief. On a small centrifugal gas turbine how does the compressor spinning at 80,000rpm operate a geared transmission. Example, turbine car, they are not driven by thrust but a powered transmission. Would you know the name of a transmission used to transform the power/thrust to do work through a transmission. How do you go from 80k rpm down to 500 rpm.

Thanks for your time.

I am not very clear on your query. But, I shall try to answer your question.

There are Four types of gearboxes used in aeroengines & aircrafts

1.Reduction Drive gearbox- to reduce speeds to drive pumps,

2. IDG-integratred Drive generator, with CSD - Constant Speed Drive, to supply constant power or thrust/ motion to various power units, electrical generators

3.FADEC- Full Authoriry digital control system, to vary engine speed,or thrust variations.

4.Accessory gear box- to drive LRU's

Refer Rolls-Royce Jet engine handbook for more details..

Hope you're clear now.
