Question
Dear sir,
Eight years ago I made the unfortunate mistake of drinking and driving. All my obligations to the state have been fulfilled and I am considering going to school to learn aircraft mechanics or avionics. Will this transgression inhibit me from receiving the licensure that I would need to have to become employed in the industry?

Answer
Hi, Mason:

As a potential applicant for an A and P license, you will need to review FAR Part 65 as well as 63 and 91 for related sections of each law to make absolutely sure you understand all sections of those regulations (which can be found on the Federal Aviation Administration website at www.faa.gov).  However, there is no current medical certification requirement to obtain an A and P certificate as there is for those who intend to pursue pilot certification--this is for pilots, but, not for mechanics.  Those things that ARE in the FARS related to alcohol use are related to those who already have an A and P and what they are required to do, report, etc, if they get one.

So, to become a licensed A and P mechanic, visit the school you are thinking about attending and check into the licensing requirements.   Or, visit www.airframeandpowerplant.com for more basic licensing and job information.

The key thing is that when you apply for jobs AFTER the receipt of the A and P license, DO NOT LIE ABOUT THE DUI.  Most employers will want to see that a major amount of time has passed since the DUI conviction---major employers like Boeing or Lockheed Martin will probably be looking for ten years since the conviction.  But, in the meantime, if they ask the question directly on the application (which most do), then, answer it directly and honestly......if they find later that yo lied, they will most likely fire you for lying on the application.  Also, if you are honest and it has been 8-10 years since the conviction (which it likely will be once you finish A and P school), then you can easily talk about how you have matured since receiving the DUI....

All the best to you,
