Question What is meant by Fuel Surcharge levied on air tickets ? Is it that we are paying for ATF fuel price or is it like penalty for something ? Please explain in detail
Answer Hi,
Thank you for your question....I will try to assist!
Yes, you hit it on the head: Through the Fuel Surcharge on Airline ticket prices (like on SpiceJet or Kingfisher), a passenger is paying 400 rupees (or so) more for each ticket to help the airline pay for jet fuel. Airline fuel surcharges were implemented begining in Spring, 2008 as overall fuel costs began to increase tremendously for the airlines.....those costs peaked in Summer, 2008 and then began to decline in Fall, 2008 (as did the fuel surcharges). As aviation turbine fuel began to escalate in cost again this Spring, airlines began to add back fuel surcharges again, after either eliminating them or reducing them in the Fall and Winter.
I am afraid that, as long as the price of airline turbine fuel is volatile (which it likely will be through the summer months), then, fuel surcharges will be with us. Watch for changes to the fuel surcharges (I predict a decline) by late August or early September, as overall ATF prices go down.
