Question
Dear Johnson

Do the altimeter Flight instrument indicates with accuracy the plane Altitude from the ground level to the pilot?.

How does the Altimeter instrument measure the Altitude?.

Thanks
Prashant

Answer
Prashant - The altimeter only measures height above sea level. It does not measure the distance above an object.
Example: If you take-off from an airport at sea level and climb to 10,000 ft the altimeter will read 10,000 feet, then if you fly over terrain which is 8,000 feet, the altimeter will show 10,000 ft. not 2,000 feet, (i.e. 10,000 - 8,000).
You can easily look on the internet and find how the altimeter works, easier than I can explain it here.
