Question
Dear D Norkus

Do the altimeter Flight instrument indicates with accuracy the plane Altitude from the ground level to the pilot?.

How does the Altimeter instrument measure the Altitude?.

Thanks
Prashant

Answer
No, the altimeter actually indicates pressure altitude. With all aircraft in a given air mass using that reference, it's a better measure as they are all on the same setting. Trying to maintain FL360 above ground level, especially over varying terrain, would create an erratic and bumpy cruise altitude.

For more details, there are many sites that explain it in depth, including- http://www.langleyflyingschool.com/Pages/Flight+Operations--Pressure+and+Density
