Question
I need some help trying to find out wither or not i can still get my a&p. i popped for marijuana on a urinalysis. i am currently in the military. i have been working on harriers for 3 1/2 years. another question i have is if i can do i still need technical schooling. and where do i go to get the training i need.

Answer
Hi, Roland:

First of all, I would check with your local Federal Aviation Administration Flight Standards District Office nearest to where you presently live on both questions.

As for the first question about whether the failed drug test will keep you from getting a certificate...I do not think this will keep you from becoming certificated, but, the FAA will know for sure.  Do NOT lie on any FAA medical forms about this incident, however, as this is a felony and also will give any company an excuse to fire you later if they learn that you did lie.  Also, keep in mind that A and P mechanics at most work locations are subject to random drug testing throughout their careers.

As far as the additional training, yes, you will need some additional training.  Again, the FAA will review your Marine Corps training records and will determine how much and what kind of training will be needed to obtain the minimum needed for your A and P license.  There are frequently programs located near the military base where you are located that can offer that training.  The FAA will know which schools are programs will have what you need.
