Africa/Travelling to EU

Question
Dear Bernard,
I have a friend I met online and she wants to come to live to the Europe - Czech republic. She has been living in Ghana for  the last three years, before she lived in USA, so she has an American passport too. I supported her with the money and now bought a flight ticket to Europe. The problem is that she was asked from the immigration officers to have around 2000 EURO as a backup or as a traveler cheque. It is a big amount and she has the flight stop in Dubai to board on another flight and after her arriving to the airport I will pick her up and care about her. I have a promise of the work  for her when she will arrive but no such amount of money as the officers asked. Is it real to ask such a big amount of money for travelling and do not allow to board on the plane without it? Thank you in advance for your answer.

Answer
Hi Milan,

There is absolutely no requirement whatsoever for someone traveling out of Ghana to have any specific amount of money on them. I have taken the flight from Accra to Dubai then on to Europe many times before and have never ever been asked how much money I have on me. If your friend is traveling on a US passport, then absolutely definitely positively she would never ever be asked how much money she has on her. I have traveled with just $200 on me when I was returning to Canada so my guess is she's taking you for a ride !

Good luck.

Bernard
