QuestionWhat can a white midclass mom (in a very diverse city) do to help her three
young black/latina girls feel proud of who they are?
AnswerHi, Julie
Good Question. I would say have them participate in cultural events in your area. I'm not sure where you are from, so I cant suggest anything specifically, but we have them in my area. You say that you live in a diverse city so there should definitely be some. You may find some on the web, Maybe on your city/county/state website can help you find fun events for your girls. I don't know how old your girls are, so I'm going to assume that they are very young. You can also teach them black history yourself but don't do it "excessively" I have seen this backfire. Go to your local bookstore and ask for African-American history books/videos/materials that are suitable for kids. I have seen alot of "black history" movies and alot of them are "too much" for kids. Talk about blacks figures who have contributed tremendously to society, and there are alot trust me, not just Dr. Martin Luther King. When they are in high school/college encourage them to take at least one Black studies course or join a black organization. (Suggest to them but don't try to force them). I'm sure you have some African-American museums in your area also. Take a trip. If they have questions or are curious don't hesitate to explain things to them if you cant do it then someone at the museum definitely can.
When you said "black/latina" girls I'm not really sure if you meant the girls where half black and latina. Or if you have adopted some black and latina girls. Either way, I hope that I was of some help to you.
Have a great day!!!!!
