Question
I have children with a african-american man. I wanted to know if the word "mullato" has ever been used as racial? I personally like the idea that I can teach my kids that they are a race, and that they are not just "mixed"

Answer
Sorry for the delay in answering you.  I'm from Louisiana and my mother is a mullato.  There is no derogatory meaning of this word, it's just another word for "mixed".  Your children are individuals who have two heratiges.  Try to teach them both.  If you were Jewish and your husband were Catholic how would you teach them about either? Or would you have them make a choice.  Don't focus so much on race, the rest of the world will do that for them.  If they have African American features they will be considered black by society at large.  Mixed race people have been a part of our society for centries...it's not new.  Good luck and I hope this helps.
