Question
I have 4 grapevines on an old farm fence that is falling down.  These vines have not been pruned in at least 5 years.  I need to figure out how to prune them and how to build a new fence or arbor to support them as the one they are on now will not survive another season.

Can you help?

Answer
Dear Annie,
It's too late to prune this year.  Pruning needs to happen before spring.  I do it after the first freeze in the fall or winter.  My suggestion is that you find a way to provide temporary support for the vines, then after they produce, build the fence or arbor.  If you get the vines supported, you may be able to replace the fence without causing any damage to the grape harvest this year.
I wish you well and much success.
Kind Regards,
Liz
