Question
Hi Judith
Thanks for taking the time to answer this if you can. I have always been somewhat interested in taking up a martial art but never jumped in, I am looking for an emotional, spiritual and physical outlet for balance in my life but do not want to be aggressive so I believe Aikido would be a good fit. You mentioned in your Bio you were involved with a dojo in upstate NY I am in the Saratoga region and was curious as to whether you knew of a good place to get started around here. I am also interested in your insight to the spiritual aspect of the art..How and why it has attracted you  and the like..Hope this isn't too personal
Thanks for all you can do
Walt

Answer
Hi Walt,
Thanks for your question. I live over in Rochester so I am not much help with the Saratoga area. I usually tell people to go watch a class where they might want to practice. Consider if you would be comfortable with the physical activity (they will teach you how to roll) and if the students are happy and if you like the instructor.
As to the spiritual aspect of the art - for me there is a large spiritual component but that comes mostly from my personal practice off the mat. It definitely supports me in being able to do technique well but I would guess that most dojos focus teaching more on the physical side. We offer instruction in breathing and meditation but most of our classes are on technique.
You are correct that aikido is not agressive. I always say that the intent is to de-escalate a situation.
I think that as you get comfortable with the moves, you will find it an excellent outlet for emotions, physical tension and it can be spiritual as well.
Hope that this helps somewhat. Ask more if you wish.
Judy
