Question
Dear Mr. Rob Gibson,
I am currently doing my IB Diploma at the Internantional School of Kuala Lumpr. To complete my IB diploma, I must write a 4000 word essay on a particular subject/experiment.
I have chosen to write up this essay on measuring the air quality in Malaysia since there was an abundance of haze due to the fires in Indonesia. Therefore, I wondering if you could help me find a procedure on how to make make the "Griess Saltzman Reagent" so I can complete my experiment.
Thank you,
Udai Pathania

Answer
Hi Udai

This web link is the best I could do

http://www.astm.org/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/DATABASE.CART/REDLINE_PAGES/D1607.htm?E...

using "Griess Saltzman Reagent" as a search parameter in "GOOGLE"

I am not a chemist and I do not measure nitrogen dioxide this way.

I use automatic analysers that measure NO2 using chemiluminecence.  Its much easier than messing about with bubblers etc however that is not much help to you.

I suggest you investigate the use of diffusion tubes to finish you work.  It depends what you need to demonstrate.  If its lots of Chem then you will have to find out about the Griess etc method from someone more knowledgeable than me.  If you wish to simply establish the pollution levels and draw conclusions then try and use diffusion tubes.

Sorry I could not be more help and please follow up if you think I can assists again.

Regards

Rob
