Air Quality/Vehicle silencer

Question
How does a vehicle silencer work?

Answer
If by the term silencer you mean an exhaust muffler, it is a chamber and pipe system for creating back pressure on the exhaust side of the engine.  By creating the back pressure, the explosions from the pistons's exhaust is evened out and reducing the overall noise level.  The greater the exhaust backpressure the lower the overall exhaust noise.  But sound reduction comes with a reduction in engine efficiency.
