Air Travel/Traveling to the Dominican with a prior DUI

Question
Hola Roberto,

I recently learned about a ridiculous Canadian regulation where they won't let a person cross from the U.S. into Canada if they have a prior DUI.  This has caused me to cancel a trip to Windsor that I was going to take next week.

My question:  Do you know if the Dominican Republic have a similar provision?  I've already booked a trip there next month.

Thanks for your help!

Answer
Dear RJH,

DUI is responsible for the killing of several people everyday around the world. Therefore, all regulations concerning this matter in my opinion are not ridiculous.

In response of your question, just to let you know, the level of DUI at Dominican Republic is ZERO.

Canada border controlled the entry of persons with prior DUI record. This record of course, was created because such person incurred into a DUI situation.

In the Dominican Republic Penalties for those driving under the influence and those causing accidents resulting in injury or death, penalties are severe. Drivers are taken into custody if found drinking and driving. The minimum detention period is 48 hours; however, detentions frequently last until a judicial decision is reached (often weeks or months), or until a waiver is signed by the injured party (usually as a result of a cash settlement).

You can enter the country, but if you face any DUI charges you will have problems with Immigration on your next visit.

Best Regards,
