Question
I'm currently living in Germany and am going to visit my parents in the States for Christmas.  I would like to bring back some locally brewed beer as a gift for my brothers.  The only problem is...I'm 20 years old.  I can legally buy it in Germany but I can't legally in the US.  Since my parents are there to pick me up at the airport...can I bring the alcohol along in my checked luggage?  Is it Illegal?  and if so, what are the penalties?  (i'm just looking to bring back about 6 biers not for personal use).

thanks for your help.

Answer
Dear Marisha,

According to the US Customs information, each traveler is entitled to bring to the US one liter (33.8 fl. oz.) of alcoholic beverages that may be included in his/her exemption provided that:

* You are 21 years old.
* It is for your own use or as a gift.
* It does not violate the laws of the state in which you arrive.

Penalties will vary from apprehension to penalties.

Hope this info helps.
Best Regards and Merry Xmas
