can i use miles that I have with united to fly delta?  i thought that they shared points?

Answer
No, you cannot use United Miles to fly on Delta.  They are in different code share alliances.
If you have United miles, but do not want to fly United, try looking at other Star Alliance airlines.  www.staralliance.com

The only other U.S. carrier in the Star Alliance is US Airways, which is not really an improvement over United, but you may find their schedule works better for you.
