Question
Hello,

My question is in regards to obtaining a passport. Is there anything that can prevent you from obtaining a passport? I heard that if you owe more then 2500.00 in back child support you will be denied, I also heard that if you have traffic tickets you will be denied? Is this true? Please help

Answer
Dear Justin,

In addition to reporting your Social Security Number to Treasury and using it in connection with debt collection, the Department of State checks Social Security Numbers against lists of persons ineligible or potentially ineligible to receive a U.S. passport. This may include background checks.

Best Regards,
