-----Question-----
Hi, My wife and I are competitive shooters and often travel across the country to attend matches. Someone at a recent match told me that each competitor (as long as he declares himself an athlete) is allowed an additional piece of luggage or accommodate his gear. So Each person (athlete) is allowed a total of 3 bags at no additional charge.

Question: Is this accurate?

Thanks
Charles
-----Answer-----
Dear Charles,

My first answer to your question is no. But could you please inform which airlines do you normally use to allow me to research them?

Thanks,
R. Gomes

Answer
Dear Charles,

I did not find anything on United.

For Delta please see the following link:
http://delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/special_baggage/fragile_bulky/sportin

For Alaska, they state that some sporting equipment (snow skis, golf clubs), may be checked in lieu of one piece of luggage, if packaged in a suitable container. Sporting equipment checked in addition to the free baggage allowance is charged an excess fee. There is a fee charged in all situations for some equipment (surfboards, scuba gear). There is no mention to shooting equipment.

Finally for Continental, please see the following link:

http://www.continental.com/web/en-US/content/travel/baggage/sports.aspx?SID=957E

In all of them, there is no mention to consider a third piece of luggage free for competitors.

Hope this helps.
Best Regards,
R. Gomes
