Question
Hello Roberto,

I will be traveling to Las Vegas on Northwest in a few weeks.  I have a few questions as I have never flew on a plane in my life.

What is it like on a plane before, during and at the end of the flight?  I am not scared the least, but would still like to know what to expect.  I have heard that alot of people get sick because of the re-circulated air on the plane.  Is this true?  If so, what should I do to avoid getting sick? (I really would hate to be sick in Vegas!)

I am also wondering about film.  I have both a digital and APS camera.  I have heard that the scanners can ruin regualr film and erase pictures on memory cards.  Which camera would be effected less?  How should I go about packing my camera so that my pictures aren't ruin upon return?

Lastly, are you allowed to bring food onto your flight?  Our flight is at 7:30 PM, and although we won't eat on the plane, we would like to bring along a few snacks such as Nutri Grain Bars, Goldfish snacks, bottled water, etc.  Is this allowed?

Thank you so much!

Meaghan

Answer
Dear Meaghan,

The Northwest web site has good reccomendations and tips for the first time travelers just like you.
You can see them at: http://www.nwa.com/travel/tips/tips.html

If you are experience some fear, take a look at:
http://www.travelhealth.co.uk/advice/fearofflying.htm

As far as the circulated air inside the airplane, it is renewed every 30 or 40 minutes.

Regarding your camera and film, note that the equipment used to screen checked baggage will damage undeveloped film.  Pack your undeveloped films in your carry-on bag.  High speed and specialty film should be hand inspected at the security checkpoint.  To facilitate hand-inspection, remove your undeveloped film from the canister and pack in a clear plastic bag. None of the screening equipment - neither the machines used for checked baggage nor those used for carry-on baggage - will affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed, slides, videos, photo compact discs, or picture discs and digital cameras and electronic image storage cards.

Finally, you can carry your own food if you want it.

Hope I helped you to clarify your questions. If you need any further help, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Have a wonderful time in Vegas, and if you have a chance don't miss to see the Cirque du Soleil.

Best Regards,
R. Gomes
