Question
When I depress the trigger, no air comes through the unit.  The gun has been
cleaned thoroughly!   Is it possible that there is a problem in the air valve or
piston?

Answer

This is a  bottom feed airbrush. The way to check the airflow is  first,
if you remove the head cap assembly,is there any air flow? or is it
still not coming through ?
If there is air coming out then you must assume there is a problem with the 1 needle cap,2 nozzle cap, or 3 head cap. Also, check the cone for any dried paint, that is called the nozzle.
Then, if there is still no air it  must mean the piston is not pushing down into the air hose or the air valve assembly is not  working properly.
You don't say  how old this airbrush is, if it is fairly new then the airvalve assembly was not made correctly, if  anold er model , they might be  worn out or bent.

It is easier to trouble shoot at the easiest part of the airbrush.
How many  lbs of pressure have you tried? It should work good at 35psi.
hope this helps
