Question
How can I turn my skill into money that the government can still agree on my making? I have been airbrushing for some time now and just need to know how to get a business started the right way.. I would prefer to be doing cars or motorbikes and the like. James.

Answer
Dear James,
I see you are in  Canada, I am in the States so I
don't  know how your business laws work.
I can only tell you that, here, I put on my tax statements I am an
artist and  follow what is allowed as far as deductions and the like
are accepted. My definition is a Freelance Artist.

After 30  odd years of  filing  I have never had a problem.

You make the claim that defines you as an ARTIST since You collect money for
work performed, or  what hard goods you sell along with the artwork
you  provide.
If you can attend a workshop for airbrushing do so,some give you a certificate
suitable for framing. After 6 years of airbrushing I did this, it helps a lot.
The knowledge you get is priceless !

As far as advertising for your art business, this is, besides "word of mouth",
starts you off as a legitimate  artist. WE don't  need any license to be an artist,..yay !
Your talent defines you and repeat business gets you a good rep.
Here are ways to get out the word.

You must have a website that displays you best artwork. See Godaddy.com, the best for getting a domain name. Check out their website service too.
Make up really attractive  business cards, & fliers..this is a must ! and better if you design them. see vistaprint.com

Visit your  local auto painting businesses, bike shops, Offer to give them a sample or photo of
your artwork.leave a flier or business cards.

Use the social networks,Facebook,Squidoo etc. to spread the word.
Use Craigs list or some similar free advertising venues,.some local papers will also work
with a one or 2 line ad.

Use your vehicle for  advertising, I airbrushed my van that displays my  website, and phone too.

Visit BMX events, and baseball youth games and offer to airbrush helmets.
Skate parks, anywhere they need helmets,T shirts, hats, sneakers, craft fairs to set up a booth or tent and work or just display our stuff.

Attend benefit venues, many are free or inexpensive.
Attend any motorcycle poker runs,or rallys, etc, and pass out your cards, show photos in an album
it's a great way to get business ! (It doesn't have to be a big one)

So, have your best work in hard photos to put up around town and on the net.
Self promotion is the key here so never stop talking to people, use the 3 foot rule,..anyone
within 3 feet of you ,tell them of your business.

Good luck  hope this helps.
