Alanis Nadine Morissette/Song Interpretations

Question
Could you please email me interpretations of any songs by Alanis Morrsette that have a religious theme and how religion is portrayed in those songs.

Answer
Hi Becki,

Sorry for the longest delay!  Been really busy here...   2 songs come to mind..  FORGIVEN and BABA.

Forgiven: It starts out with a suitably atmospheric feeling of adoration, only to upset it at once with barbed lyrics aimed directly at the Catholic system that warped her childhood moral attitudes. Alanis rejected the "concept of organized religion" years ago in reaction to the indoctrination at her Catholic schol, but she says she is Christian.

Baba: My direct experiences with spiritual materialism within certain communities (particularly in the west), and the Idealism of eastern/exotic spiritual practices.. sensing the dissonance between the competition, elitism and judgment within some of these culturally adopted rituals/gods and compassion itself..

God bless,

Dana
