Alaska/Denali Trip

Question
Hi Michael,

I want to take my 10 year old son on a week long camping trip to Denali.  I
live in San Jose, CA and was wondering what would be the best way to go
(driving or flying)?  I want to keep it as economical as possible.  Also, when is
the best time to go?  Our time is somewhat flexible.  Your input would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks for help,
Kim

Answer
Hi Kim!

I would have written you earlier, but I just returned this evening from San Antonio to attend my son's Air Force Basic Training graduation. (I guess he's following in his dad's footsteps).  Anyway, on to your question.

If your time is flexible and you'll be starting from San Jose, CA...I would definitely fly to Anchorage, rent yourself a car or small camper, and drive up to Denali. It will only take you about 4 hours max - this includes stopping quite a few times to photograph moose, caribou, or mountain scenes on the way up...trust me, you won't be able to NOT stop! It'll be absolutely breathtaking...you'll see.

I would go in late May/early June (before the onslaught of tourists start their treks north) or late August/early September (when the same onslaught of tourists start making their way out of Alaska again).  As far as camping at Denali, there's a few campgrounds to pitch a tent or park your camper, but you can also stay in cabins right outside the park and go visit the park every day if you'd like.

NOTE: If you do happen to go tenting, please ensure you pay strict attention to the park rangers' warnings of how to keep yourselves and/or your camp area safe from bears.

I hope that helped a little in preparing for your trip to Alaska. Let me know if you have any other questions Kim. Have fun!!

Expertise

I am very knowledgable and experienced on where to go and what to do in ALASKA. I spent 3 years hiking and doing my wildlife and scenic photography there and can offer a multitude of traveling advice (and helpful hints) while in or traveling to Alaska.

Experience

I have traveled all over Alaska, including the end of the Aleutian Island chain, driven on every single named highway in and around Alaska (except one), climbed and camped out on Gulkana Glacier, and fished for halibut in Prince William Sound. I spent my finest hours photographing caribou, moose, grizzly, and bald eagles.
