AnswerHere's a few problems.
1) If Mary can paint a room in 5 days and John can paint the same room in 3 days, how long will it take them working together?
1/5 +1/3 = 1/x and x = 1.875 days
2) George invests $13,000 for a year and earns $810. If part was invested at 5% and part at 7%, how much did he invest at each rate?
Let x = amt. invested at 5% and y = amt. invested at 7%
x+y = 13000 and 0.05x +0.07y = 810 so x = $5000 and y = $8000
3) If walnuts cost $3.00 a pound and pecans cost $4.75 a pound, how much of each would you need for a 14 pound mixture costing $4.00 a pound?
W + P = 14 and 3.00W +4.75P = 4.00(14) so W = 6 and P = 8
