QUESTION: the sum of the digits of a two digit number is 6. the number is six times the units digit. find the number

ANSWER: Assume the number is XY.  Then X+Y = 6 and 10X+Y = 6Y
So the number is 24

QUESTION: where did the 10 (10x+y=6y) come from?

ANSWER: from the statement that the number is six times the units digit.

Answer
You can't just say XY = 6Y
You have to spell it out and XY = 10X+Y just like 43 = 40+3.  Get it?

Sorry if you think I'm not be helpful.  If you want to work a problem of that type, you have to work it that way.  Of course, that one was so simple that you could have tried trial and error.
