Question
A store uses twice as many five-dollar bills as ten-dollar bills. $2500 was obtained in five- and ten-dollar bills. How many five-dollar bills were obtained? I can't figure out how to set this up. Thanks for your help.

Let F be the number of five dollar bills
Let T be the number of ten dollar bills

The store uses twice as many five-dollar bills as ten-dollar bills , so

F = 2T


$2500 was obtained in five- and ten-dollar bills , so

5F + 10T = 2500  (each five dollar bill is worth $5 , each ten dollar bill is worth $10)


Because F = 2T ,

5(2T) + 10T = 2500

10T + 10T = 2500

20T = 2500

T = 125


Since F = 2T , F = (2)(125) = 250


There are 250 five dollar bills and 125 ten dollar bills
