QuestionWeek 1 Assignment 3C
1. Simplify the algebraic expression 3x2 – 2y + 7x2 – 5y + 3 and evaluate it for x = 2, y = 14. Identify the variables, constants, and coefficients in the simplified expression.
2. In a certain triangle, the second side is one-third of the first side in length. The third side is 2 meters less than the first side. The perimeter of the triangle is 26 meters. Form an algebraic equation to express the problem, and identify the variables, coefficients, and constants of the algebraic expression.
3. List any four situations where variables can be used to replace numbers; convert each situation into an algebraic expression.
The sum of three consecutive odd numbers is 99; what are the numbers? would the answer be: n+33+55= 99
A woman buys four CDs for $52.92, including 8% sales tax. How much did each CD cost?
Would the answer be .08 x 52.92 - n = 4x
Answer1. f = 10x^2 -7y +3
for x = 2, y = 14, f = -55
the variables are x and y, the constant is 3, the coefficients are
10 and -7
2. let the sides be x, y and z.
then y = x/3 and z = x-2
so x+y+z = 26 or x +x/3 +(x-2) = 26 , solve for x and then y and z.
I presume you mean n+33+35 = 99, n = 31
4x(1.08) = 52.92, solve for x
