Question
A coin purse contais a mixture of 32 coins in dimes and quarters. The coins have a total value of $5, or 500 cents.Determins the number of dimes and the number of quarters in the purse.

Answer
Hello Chantal

A dime is worth 10 cents and a quarter is one fourth of a dollar.

So the purse contains 32 coins, implies that the sum of all coins (dimes + quarters) is 32.

In addition, the sum of the money (their Value) is $5

Assuming D and Q represent the number of dimes and quarters respectively,
We have a wonderful mathematical expression.

D + Q = 32
0.1D + 0.25Q = $5

To solve this simultaneous equation, you can us substitution method.

D = 32 – Q
Now, substitute the above equation in place of D in the second equation.

0.1   (32 – Q) + 0.25Q = 5
  3.2 – 0.1Q + 0.25Q = 5
  3.2 + 0.15Q = 5
  0.15Q = 1.8
  Q = 12
Therefore, there are definitely 12 quarters and…

D + 12 = 32
D = 20

…20 dimes in the purse
