Question
Pietro needs to rent a truck for 1 day. He calls two rental companies to compare costs. Joe's garage charges $80 for the day and $0.22/km. Ace Trucks charges $100/day and 0.12/km Under what circumstances do the 2 companies charge the same amount ? When would it be better for Pietro to rent from Joe's Garage ?

Answer
Let k = kilometer travelled.

The costs are $80 + $0.22k and $100 + 0.12k

Set 80 + 0.22k = 100 + 0.12k to find out when they are the same.

Add -80 - 0.12k to both sides giving 0.10k = 20.

Divide by 0.1, giving k = 200.

Looking back at the problem, it looks like the distance is 200km.
