Question
Hi, I am trying to help tutor my son through his math class. Here is the question.  If you can get me started I think it will come back to me.
Find a linear function with f(-1)=2 and f(3)=1.
How do I set this up?

Answer
The first point is (-1,2) and I will call it (x1,y1).

The second point is (3,1) and I will call it (x2,y2).

The slope m is (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) = (1-2)/(3-(-1)) = -1/4.

Take y-y1 = m(x-x1), put in what m, x1, and y1 are, and there's the answer.

This is in the point-slope form.

To put it in point-slope from, take y = mx - m(x1) + y1.
