Question
I need help solving this substitution method problem.

x + y = -4
x - y = 2

Can you help me please?

Answer
Note that both equations can be solved for x.
The 1st one gives x = -y - 4.
The 2nd one gives x = y + 2.

Since both are values for x, set them equal and solve for y.
Using this value of y, put it back in equation 1 to find x.
Using the 2nd equation, put in both x and y to make sure the answer is right.
