Question
peter's dad told him if he paid a deposit of one-fifth he would pay the rest on an ipod. peter deposited one-fifth and left his father to pay $48. what is the equation to how much the ipod would cost. and how much did peter pay

Answer
Let P be the price of the iPod .

Peter paid  one fifth of the price ,
(1/5)P

Peter's father paid the rest of the price
$48

so the total price of the iPod is

(1/5)P + 48

so

P =   (1/5)P + 48

this is an equation for the price of the iPod

Solve for P, subtract  (1/5)P  from both sides
of the equation.

(4/5)P = 48

P = (5/4)(48)

P = 60

the price of the iPod is $60

Peter paid one fifth of the price ,
(1/5)(60) = $12

Peter paid $12
