Question
i am having trouble with the following problems:

8=3(1/2w-4)+8

20x-(3-5x)=22

have tried both several times and can't seem to come up with the right answer.

Answer
You need to be clearer writing your problems.
Do you mean 1/(2w-4) or (1/2)w-4?
I assume you mean the latter so you have 8 = 3[(1/2)w-4] +8
So you can cancel 8 on each side to get 0 = 3[(1/2)w-4]
giving you w = 8
20x-(3-5x) = 22, 20x-3+5x = 22, 25x = 25, x = 1

Sorry, but I'm not used to having explain 7th grade problems.
