Make a number line an label the distance from the left edge
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

Put a circle above 2 and 9.
Connect these two circles with a line.

Thus, the area with a line is all the points between 2 and 9 but not including the points 2 or 9.
